Through the fence, between the curling flower spaces, I could see them. My friends. They weren't human anymore. They changed with the infection. You know the books you read about zombies and undead walking the earth. Well, that's what happened to them. They were changed. Their mom and dad never had the heart to kill them. I can understand why. It'd be hard to kill your own child.
"Come on. We can cross the bridge to the other side to safety," My best friend whispered, "We need to hurry. They'll blow it up soon." I got up trying not to make much of a sound then followed her. We walked for a long time. And snuck around all the zombies. It was hard but we made it to the bridge. I saw the big red button on the beam that helped hold the bridge up. I knew if I pressed the bridge would open But the sound would make the zombies run at us. Without stopping.
My friend was looking at her arm for an unusual amount of time. "Something wrong?" I asked. She shook her head and rolled up her sleeve. She was actting weird. Very weird. I asked her if she was ready to get across this bridge. She nodded and I hit the button. The loud sound created a horde of what used to be humans. Then we started to run.
We ran as fast as we could but the bridge was falling apart piece by piece. I heard a scream and turned around. My friend had fallen and was holding on to the edge. I ran back and tried to help her. But the horde was coming fast. "Just go." She yelled. Before I could grab her hand, the piece she was holding on to broke. Then she fell right into the infected water. I knew if she were to live from the fall, the infection would turn her.
It was a fine cry-loud and long- but it had no bottom and it had no top, just circles and circles of sorrow. I reached the end of the bridge. I had been bitten and held on to the wound. To try and stop the bleeding. When the national guard found me they checked me for bites. They found it. I heard them say something and a gun was held to my head. "I'm sorry." A radio voice said. Then the last thing I heard was a bang.
Been in a zombie mood recently.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, that ending! It seems like in all the zombie shows/movies I've seen the protagonist always ends up escaping a bite or being immune to it somehow. I like how you went for the kill! Much more realistic. And what a cool picture of the bridge you added to set the scene. Thanks, Bo!
